The first two International Archean Symposia were presented by the Western Australian Division of the Geological Society of Australia in 1970 and 1980. Geoconferences was then constituted to take on the responsibility for the Third International Archean Symposium in 1990.
Since then, Geoconferences has presented the 4th and 5th symposia in 2001 and 2010, respectively, and this symposia series is the association’s flagship event. The 6th symposium is now scheduled for 2023, following global disruptions due to the pandemic.
Key features of the symposia series are its focus on the Archean Earth, the ten-year cycle of symposia, a commitment to holding the event in Perth and showcasing Western Australian Precambrian geology, and a single-session format to encourage collaboration and networking by attendees
