Travel report by Tomoaki Nagata
Thanks to the Geoconferences (WA) Inc. and the JH Lord Travel Grant, I was able to attend the 5th International Archean Symposium in Perth, Western Australia, 5-9 September 2010. A lot of scientists presented and discussed during conference.
I presented a poster at 3rd day afternoon. This is the first chance for me to join and speak in English at international conference. I had an opportunity speaking in English for 5 minutes about my research in front of people despite poster presentation. So, this experience gave me good experience of my life.
My poster title is “HYDROTHERMAL ACTIVITY AND IRON SEDIMENTATION IN NAGAHAMA BAY, SATSUMA IWO-JIMA ISLAND, KAGOSHIMA, JAPAN.” Satsuma-Iwojima is volcanic island, located 38km south of Kyushu Island, Japan, 6km wide and 3km long. Many hot springs identified along the shore. Brown to creamy white water, which formed mixing with hot spring water and seawater, identified around this island. These reddish brown color water formed by neutralization of the high acidic hot spring. It formed from dissolved Fe2+ ion in acidic hot spring to red colored ferrihydrite (Fe3+). Especially, Nagahama Bay is located one of best and active hot spring discharge and preserved reddish color ocean in this island. Half cleidoic environment of the Nagahama Bay preserved high rate sedimentation iron oxide. In Nagahama Bay, red color iron rich water affected by tidal current, but sedimentation of the ferric deposit (iron hydroxide) is confirmed in the sea bottom. In this study, to understand the iron sedimentation in Nagahama Bay, we did some research. Finally this study aim at providing a clue of making mechanism of Banded Iron Formation (BIF) by understanding iron precipitation and sedimentation from modern shallow ocean.
Fortunately, some specialists of BIF attended this conference. So, I heard useful information from their presentations and discussions.
Additionally, we visited Geological Survey’s core library at 2nd day evening. My teacher has some core samples in this library. This experience is also valuable time for me.
Anyway, I would have been unable to attend this conference without assistance of JH Lord Travel Grant. Sincere thanks to the Geoconferences for providing funds to help me.
