Based at a Western Australian tertiary institution?
JH Lord Travel Grants are available to support your attendance at local, national and international geological conferences, training courses and field excursions. Applicants presenting the results of their work will be given priority.
Grants for an interstate conference or field excursion will typically cover the registration fee, and, if applicable, subsidise an economy airfare and budget accommodation costs.
Based interstate or overseas?
Applications from outside Western Australia are only available to:
- postgraduate students, postdoctoral and early career researchers (<5 years after PhD).
- those presenting the results of their work at a conference held in Western Australia.
Grants will typically cover the registration fee and subsidise an economy airfare to Western Australia and budget accommodation costs.
For applicants who reside in countries designated by the World Bank as ‘low-income’ or ‘lower-middle-income’ economies, the Travel Grants Committee has the discretion to make travel and accommodation arrangements associated with the conference and fully cover these costs. The recipients of such grants will be encouraged to visit local research institutions to promote scientific exchange.
Geoconferences may provide waived registration fees and/or travel support postgraduates, postdoctoral and early career researchers (<5 years after PhD) from Australia, and overseas countries, with special consideration to applicants who reside in countries designated by the World Bank as ‘low-income’ or lower-middle-income’ economies. Conditions
Only online applications from a recognised research institution’s email address will be accepted.
Proof of enrolment or involvement in a relevant research project must be provided by the research institution.
Grant recipients will be required to submit a written report, of 200 to 300 words, on the event attended, including a summary of the work presented, and the benefits derived from attending the conference or field excursion. The report must be submitted within six weeks of the event, and may be used for publicity purposes.
Only one grant may be given over the course of the recipient’s research.

Who was JH Lord?
The JH Lord Travel Grants are provided in memory of Mr Joseph (Joe) Henry Lord (1919-1999), who was instrumental in setting up Geoconferences and was its inaugural Chairman.During his time in senior positions in both Government and industry, Joe Lord made a major contribution to ensuring that Western Australia remains a focus for exploration and mining by promoting the need for the geological community to be well informed and up-to-date. He was Director of the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) for twenty years, from 1961. Upon his retirement from the GSWA, he set up and initially directed the Western Australian Minerals and Petroleum Research Institute, today the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA).
